I was wondering when the lunacy of the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) alarmists would start to become evident. I had my first real glimpse of it this past week. Right on national television prime time news, an AGW alarmist cracked. In an interview the reporter asked what I thought was a brilliant question; “if the earth is getting hotter from global warming then why is this winter one of the coldest in decades?”
What followed in his response was the epitome of the lunacy that I speak of. He said “global warming is changing our climate so that we will begin to see much wider temperature extremes.” The reporter asked “how does that explain the cold winter?” The alarmist replied “because of the wider temperature extremes, we will see colder winters and hotter summers!” What? Global warming will produce colder winters?
Sorry folks but this assertion is total unadulterated and unscientific rubbish. Think about the math behind what he’s saying. Let’s assume that before global warming, summers averaged around 90 degrees and winters averaged around 30 degrees. The temperature spread would be 60 degrees. The average temperature would be 60 degrees. Now, let’s apply global warming and increase the temperature range. Let’s assume summer temperatures to be 100 degrees and winter to be 20 degrees. Now the temperature spread is 80 degrees. But, the average temperature would still be 60 degrees! There is no net warming.
Now let’s take a look at the science behind what these alarmists are claiming. The climate system is incredibly complex and non-linear. There are two basic concepts that drive the climate called forcings. There are positive forcings and negative forcings. Positive forcings serve to make earth’s climate hotter and negative forcings serve to make the earth cooler.
Because of the non-linearity of the climate system, very small changes in either could cause catastrophic run-away heating or cooling of the planet if there weren’t built in regulators. These regulators are called feedback loops. They are basically negative and positive forcings interacting with each other in a way that balances the net effect of changes to either. For example, if solar insolation (output from the sun) increases the earth’s temperature will increase. However, the increase in temperature will increase cloud formation. Clouds reflect solar radiation back out to space which has a cooling effect. That cooling effect counteracts the heating so that there is no net increase in temperature.
This is where the bogus nature of the science that AGW alarmists spout starts to become evident. What they’re saying is that global warming is dampening the feedback loops in the climate system so that the regulators no longer provide the regulation needed to balance temperature extents. A common term you’ll hear from alarmists is the “tipping point” - the point at which the regulating feedbacks fail completely and the planet goes into uncontrollable thermal run-away and burns up. Scary isn’t it? Well, the alarmists intend it to be.
The problem with this melt down notion is it can’t happen. Paleoclimatic history has demonstrated that this earth has been through many eons of incredible climate changes that far exceed anything we see today and yet the regulators worked. When the earth was young, it was hellishly hot yet the forming atmosphere was able to self regulate, in spite of the heat, into the climate which we enjoy today (which happens to be about 6 deg. C cooler than the previous interglacial epoch). The measly 1.2 degrees C increase in temperatures alarmists claim we’ll see by the end of this century hardly bodes of any conditions that might remotely dampen the feedback loops.
So, why all this bogus science and fear mongering on the part of alarmists? The answer is simple... agenda. Most alarmists, like Al Gore, are social progressives who believe that our country should give up its sovereignty and submit to a one world government under the dictates of the United Nations. We are evil destroyers of the planet and we need to cease to be a world power and join the global community as an even player. That necessarily means we need to destroy our economy through carbon cap and trade policies, limit industry and GNP through CO2 legislation in order to stop the global warming apocalypse they say will come. Only when our great country has been hurled back to a 3rd world status will we be willing to accept leadership from outside our borders and save humanity.
